Google says it will sign the EU AI practice code

Google has confirmed that it will sign the European Union’s General Purpose AI Practice Code, a voluntary framework aimed at helping AI developers implement processes and systems to comply with block AI laws.

In particular, Meta earlier this month called the implementation of the EU’s AI law “overreach,” saying that Europe would not sign the code, stating that it was “on the wrong path for AI.”

Google’s commitment will take place a few days before the “general AI model” providers take effect on August 2nd. Companies that are likely to be affected by these rules include key names such as Humanity, Google, Meta, Openai, and several other large-scale generative models.

In a blog post Wednesday, Kent Walker, Google’s president of Global Affairs, admitted that the final version of the Code of Practice is better than the EU originally proposed, but he still looked at reservations on AI law and code.

“We are concerned that AI law and code risks will slow the development and deployment of AI in Europe, particularly that EU copyright law, steps to delay approval, or requirements to expose trade secrets can cool the development and deployment of European models and can undermine Europe’s competitiveness,” Walker writes.

By signing the EU Code of Practice, AI companies will agree to follow the slate of guidelines, including providing up-to-date documentation on AI tools and services. There is no training AI for pirated content. We will comply to prevent requests from being used in the dataset from the content owner.

The EU’s groundbreaking AI law, a risk-based regulation of AI applications, prohibits use cases of “unacceptable risks” such as cognitive behavioral manipulation and social scoring. The rules also define a set of “high-risk” uses, such as biometric authentication and facial recognition, the use of AI in domains such as education and employment. The Act also requires developers to register AI systems and meet risk and quality control obligations.
