Just two months after an anonymous Meta employee warned “Metagenaiorg” on a professional forum blind [is] In a panic mode surrounding the rise of open source competitors like Deepseek, the company is currently losing one of the top AI leaders.

Joelle Pineau, vice president of Meta’s AI Research, announced on Tuesday that she will resign. In a LinkedIn post, she said it will be May 30th on her last day at work.

“After nearly eight years in Meta, it’s time to say goodbye, or, as I said in Montreal, venue D’Costrocher Mes Patins at L’Heure Est. This was a lifelong professional experience!” Pineau wrote on LinkedIn.

“My last day will be May 30th. After that, I will take some time to observe and reflect before diving into a new adventure,” she added.

Her departure is putting pressure on Meta as she pours billions of dollars into artificial intelligence, hoping to catch up with players like Openai and Google or pull ahead. Mark Zuckerberg revealed that AI is the company’s number one priority and has a goal that goes far beyond just chatbots. He hopes Meta will create an AI assistant for use by over a billion people, and ultimately build artificial general information.

“As the competition for AI accelerates, the world undergoes major changes and as Meta prepares for the next chapter, it’s time to create space for others to pursue their work,” writes Pineau. “I cheer on from the bystanders. I know that I have all the necessary materials to build the best AI systems in the world and lead billions of people responsible for the lives of them.”

Pineau joined Meta in 2017, leading the Montreal AI Research Lab and advanced to Head Fair (Basic AI Research) in 2023. Her work touched on many of the company’s most influential projects, from Pytorch, which has become a go-to tool for AI developers, to the Llama series of open source language models.

Her exit will arrive a few weeks before Meta’s Ramacon event on April 29th. The company is expected to announce the latest version of the llama and introduce a standalone app for meta AI chatbots. Meta has the Llama 4 positioned as the backbone of the next generation of AI agents.

Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said in March that Lama 4 will play a major role in enhancing the power of these agents. This is the meta answer to the growth trends of generator AI tools, CNBC reported.

“Joel thanked Fair for his leadership,” a Meta spokesman said in a statement. “She is an important voice for open source and helped push breakthroughs to advance the product and the science behind it.”

Pineau didn’t say anything like this, but she “plans to take the time to ‘observe and reflect’ before diving into a new adventure.

Her decision comes to her to leave during a critical stretch of Meta’s AI strategy. The company has placed a big bet on open source models like Lama to attract developers and build trust, but faces increased competition from faster players that have been able to lean. Just recently, DeepSeek (a small open source model) has attracted attention because it outweighs much larger systems at a small cost.

It remains to be seen whether Pineau’s departure is a blip or a larger signal of internal distortion, but one thing is clear. Meta’s AI efforts are at a crossroads, and the pressure is only getting bigger.
