The Event’s Women’s Network (Nowie) launched an annual report aimed at better understanding of the challenges women face in the event industry, revealing results from the “big survey.”
Founded in 2013 and recently moved to a community interest company, Nowie exists to create better opportunities for women at every stage of their event career through community, mentorship, networking and advocacy.
Women from all areas of the event sector were invited to complete the survey anonymously.
Respondents were asked to share workplace experiences covering topics ranging from experiences of workplace harassment to childcare, childbirth, salary, career opportunities, and more.
The findings of the survey shed light on:
→83% of survey respondents were identified as white – suggesting a clear lack of diversity within the female workforce at the event
→Three out of four women experienced or witnessed gender-based discrimination at the workplace. Ten percent of women experience sexual assault on the scene.
→Only 8% of respondents took on the role of director level.
→57% of respondents feel that their income does not reflect their work fairly.
→Work/life balance (25%) and gender bias (24%) were reported as the biggest challenges for women working at events.
Cat Kevern, director of Nowie said: “We have created a big survey to provide the hard data that needs to be taken. From the findings it is clear that the women at the event still have a long way to go before they truly flourish.”
The Nowie team would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the distribution of this project, especially those who take the time to provide answers and insights for the generous sponsorship of the Event Industry Forum (EIF) and the Night Industry Association (NTIA).
