According to Bloomberg, Niantic, behind the popular reality game Pokemon Go, reports that it is about to sell its game development business.

The company reportedly is selling the units for around $3.5 million, investigating a deal with mobile game developer Scopely, owned by Saudi Arabia-based Savvy Games Group.

Niantic and Scopely did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

Niantic is one of the few companies that have been able to build games using augmented reality chops. Its first title, Ingress, was widely praised for its unique geographically based take on territory control, but the company took off in 2016 and quickly became a global phenomenon.

The titles that followed were relatively successful, but they were not on the scale that Pokemon GO enjoyed. In 2022, the company let go of 8% of its staff and closed four projects, including Harry Potter: The Wizards Unite. In 2023, 230 employees were fired and NBA and Marvel-related games were cancelled.

Last year, we updated the Scaiverse app to allow users to model real objects and provide data to developers. In November, the company said it wanted to use machine learning to build a large-scale geospatial model that “understands the scene and connects to millions of scenes around the world.”
