Relations between Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger with Algeria have deteriorated amid a series of coups and strengthened Russian ties.
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger recall the ambassadors from Algeria in response to the downing of Mariand Loan.
The Sahel State (AES), a coalition of three African countries, accused Algeria of “irresponsible conduct” in breach of international law after announcing its withdrawal on social media on Monday.
The move escalates tensions between the Allied military government and the Algerian trio.
The AES said it views the law as “an attack on the whole coalition” and “contrary to the historical and fraternal relations between the people of the AES coalition and the people of the Algerians.”
The envoy was recalled for consultations on its contribution “to regional destabilization,” the AES added.
The destruction of aircraft flying near the Algerian border town of Zauatin on the night of March 31st to April 1st “stopping “neutralization of terrorist groups planning terrorist acts” between March 31st and April 1st, according to an AES statement.
Separately, Prime Minister Abdoulei Maiga, the leader of Mali’s military authorities, argued that the incident proved “the Algerian regime sponsors international terrorism.”
Earlier in the week, Algiers claimed the drone was targeted as it had violated more than 2km (1.2 miles) into the airspace, calling it an “armed surveillance drone.”
Bamako said a preliminary investigation revealed that the drone was flying around Mali territory, about 10 km (6 miles) from the Algerian border.
Shift Dynamics
The AES was formed last year in the aftermath of several coups, following the exits to Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the nearly 50-year-old regional bloc known as the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS).
The three countries, located in the Sahel region, on the southern tip of the Sahara, have been plagued by ISIL (ISIS) and al-Qaeda armed groups, carrying out bloody attacks on civilians and increasingly territorial territories.
Though Algeria served as a key mediator for many years as the Mali government fought against Tuareg rebels for decades after the country became independent from France in 1960, tensions have risen in recent months.
However, two military coups in Mali in 2020 and 2021 changed dynamics, with Mali and other AES members moving to cut ties with France and strengthen ties with Russia.
Algerian officials have denounced the Russian mercenaries and armed drones, near Tin Zauertin, the border town of the northern country where the drones were found.
