Snowflake to retrieve database startup crunchy data

The surge in data company acquisitions continued Monday after Snowflake purchased Crispy Data.

Cloud data platform Snowflake announced its intention to retrieve Crispy Data, a Postgres database partner, late this afternoon. Sources familiar with the matter estimated the transaction was worth around $250 million.

The term has not been revealed. Snowflake declined to comment on the rating of the deal.

It’s the latest in a series of high-tech giants buying data startups to enhance the underlying database products that power AI agents. Last week, Salesforce acquired decades-old Informatica to enhance its data management tools for AI agents. A few weeks ago, Alation acquired Numbers Station, allowing customers to access AI agents that can run on structured data. And earlier this month, ServiceNow acquired data.world with AI agents in mind.

Crispy data gives businesses the tools they need to build with object-related database management systems that are popular with Postgres, open source, and developers, and work well with SQL database languages. The 13-year-old company works with public sector organizations such as the US Department of Homeland Security, as well as clients such as UPS, SAS and MoneyTree.

With this acquisition, Snowflake will provide the basic technology needed to launch Snowflake Postgres, an enterprise-grade PostgreSQL database for its customers, and partners such as Blue Yonder and Landingai. The transaction also further strengthens Snowflake’s database products in the age of AI agents.

This technology will soon be available in private preview.

“Our vision is to provide our customers with the world’s most trusted and comprehensive data and AI platform,” Snowflake’s Engineering SVP, Vivek Raghunathan, said in a press release provided to TechCrunch. “Today’s announcement of the proposed acquisition of crispy data represents another reason why Snowflake is the ultimate destination for all enterprise data and AI needs. We need to tackle a massive $350 billion market opportunity and bring post-gress to our customers in the Snowflake AI Data Cloud.”

In 2024, Snowflake launched a new connector for Snowflake customers, launching PostgreSQL and MySQL. Now it’s inflated that product. Snowflake also acquired data management company Datavolo last year.
