Nintendo announced Thursday that it is working on virtual game cards. This is a feature that makes digitally downloaded games more portable on various devices. With the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, these virtual game cards make it easier for users to port existing Switch games to new devices.

As it stands, Switch games can be purchased as physical game cards, such as traditional video game cartridges, or as digital downloads. You can easily eject a physical game card and reinsert it into another switch, but digital downloads have made the ports from device to device a bit more difficult.

Virtual game cards available in late April are intended to make digital games work the same way as physical games. Players can easily transition the game between two devices as long as they connect locally the first time the game is transferred.

The virtual game card comes with the ability to lend the game to anyone in the Nintendo Family Group, including up to 8 people via local Wi-Fi. Users can lend one game to a particular person at a time, and at the end of the 14-day borrowing period, the game will automatically return to the lender.

There is no official word yet about when Switch 2 will be released, but fans are looking forward to more information about the console on Nintendo’s in-person live stream scheduled for April 2nd.
