Trump says Zelensky is willing to sign a critical mineral trade a few days after the explosion in the oval office.
President of the United States Donald Trump has revealed that he has received a letter from Ukrainian leader Voldymee Zelensky.
“Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiation table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Trump said in his address to Parliament on Tuesday night, no one wants peace more than Ukrainians while quoting from the letter.”
“My team and I are ready to work to work under President Trump’s strong leadership,” Trump quoted Zelensky as writing.
“Isn’t that beautiful?” he said. “It’s time to stop this insanity. It’s time to stop the murder. It’s time to end this pointless war. If you want to end the war, you have to talk to both sides.”
Trump’s revelation comes days after seeing a fierce exchange between him and Zelensky in his oval office halted important military aid to Ukraine in the fourth year of his war with Russia.
Zelenskyy then tried to bring Trump back onside and posted on social media that their clash “remorse” and that he wanted to “get things right.”
In his parliamentary speech, Trump also said Ukraine is ready to sign the rare earth mineral agreement “whenever it is convenient for you,” and will not give any further details.
Ukraine is believed to have deposits of strategically important minerals, including titanium, lithium and manganese, that are useful for US aerospace, electric vehicles and medical manufacturing.
The Trump administration has argued that by tightening economic ties with Ukraine through an agreement that provides access to these precious mineral deposits, Russia will stop its future match against Kiev.
Zelenskyy had left a contract at the table when he visited Washington, D.C. after an oval office discussion with Trump. This is when US Vice President JD Vance accused Ukrainian leader of being ungrateful about US support, and Trump said he had no “card.”
Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reported from Washington, DC, that Zelensky wanted to get past the negotiation table.
“He was under pressure. [Zelenskyy] To make a trade. And he is willing to accept that Donald Trump is ready to offer at this point. This includes access to his country’s rare earth minerals in exchange for a certain level of American support,” he added.
Trump was expected to use Tuesday’s speech to plan the Ukrainian war, but he did not further elaborate how he thinks about ending the three-year conflict. However, he said he was engaged in “a serious discussion with Russia.”
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said cutting off US military aid to Ukraine, while waiting to confirm Trump’s move, was the best possible step towards peace.
US Democrats have raised protests against Trump’s sudden pivot towards Russia, the most dramatic geopolitical change in a generation in Washington, D.C., which prioritizes defense from Moscow, which has opposed Europe under both parties since the 1940s.
