These are important developments on the 1,111th day of Russia’s Ukrainian War.

This is the situation for Tuesday, March 11th:

Fineting

One civilian was killed, and three more were reportedly injured in one of the biggest Ukrainian drone attacks in Moscow in a matter of months. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobiyanin said Russian air defense units had destroyed at least 69 drones flying towards Moscow in a “large-scale” attack. Four airports in the Moscow region and the Domodedovo train network were forced to halt services due to the attack. Russia’s TASS news agency reported a major fire in a parking lot near the Russian capital, but several apartments were also damaged. A Russian war blogger said the Kremlin forces have expanded further into the country’s Kursk region as part of a major siege operation that pushes out thousands of Ukrainian soldiers who hold territory within Russia. Oleksandr Silsky, the top Kiev general, denied that his army was under siege by Russian troops, adding that the situation was under control. However, Ukrainian forces needed to be strengthened “with electronic warfare and unmanned components,” Silsky said. Ukrainian forces said they fired 130 of the 176 Russian drones that Russia fired overnight, but a further 42 people were unable to reach the target. Andri Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukrainian border guards, said Russian forces are trying to create an aggressive combat zone from Russia’s Kursk region across the border in the Smie region of the northeastern part of Ukraine. The Russian emergency ministry said the Ukrainian drone attack caused a major fire in Russia’s southern Samara region. No injuries have been reported. Ukrainian military general staff said it had attacked two Russian oil refineries in the Riazan and Samara regions, which fueled Moscow’s troops. Three people have been killed and nine injured in the Ukrainian attack on the village of Bellaya in the Belovsky district of Russia’s Kursk district, local governor Alexander Kinstein said.

Politics and diplomacy

Ukrainian President Voldy Mie Zelensky and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Saudi Arabia prior to a meeting between Kiev and Washington to end the Russian war with Ukraine. The AFP news agency said Kiev will propose a partial, air and naval ceasefire with Russia during talks in Saudi Arabia, citing Ukrainian officials. A senior Ukrainian government source also told AFP that Russia had gained significant advantages over Kiev during the US suspension to share military intelligence with Ukrainian forces. The US special mission to Middle Eastern Steve Witkov said it hopes Washington will see significant advances in consultations with Ukraine this week. Witkov also said that sharing the intelligence news with Ukraine will also be discussed at this week’s meeting, but insisted that the US will never block Ukrainian officers from receiving information for their defensive needs. Zelensky promised a completely “constructive” position by Ukraine in consultations with the US, adding that his country hopes for practical results from negotiations in Saudi Arabia to end the Russian war in his country. Russia’s FSB Security Services said two British diplomats have been ousted from Russia on suspicion of spying. The Kremlin said the exiled was the second secretary and husband of the British Embassy. Prime Minister Kiel Starmers Office said the UK will hold a virtual meeting between leaders of the country who are willing to support the ceasefire in Ukraine.
