These are important events on the 1,160th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.
This is where things stand on Tuesday, April 29th.
Fineting
After the Ukrainian troops issued a red warning system, explosions were heard throughout Kiev, and the air defense system responded to Russian attacks on the capital. Ukrainian forces said they fired down 40 of the 166 drones launched by Russia in multiple attacks on Monday. He also said 74 drones were redirected by electronic warfare, and their damage was recorded in four regions. One of these attacks, according to the regional governor, attacked gas facilities in Ukraine’s central Cherkassy region, leaving consumers with parts of the city of Cherkassy and the surrounding villages without gas. Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky praised his foreign intelligence agency for the “liquidation” of top Russian military personnel, which is considered a reference to the murder of Russian military officer Yarosarv Moskarik in last week’s car bombing. Moscow’s defense ministry said 51 Ukrainian drones were destroyed in a space of less than three hours on Monday, most of which were destroyed in the western Kursk region of Russia. Military analysts said Ukrainian decision to invade Kursk was a breach of its strategy that allowed Russia to assert additional territory within Ukraine. “Essentially, Ukraine traded the territory that values its territory most – in itself, it didn’t value it and couldn’t hold it forever.”
Russia has declared a one-sided ceasefire
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a three-day ceasefire in the war with Ukraine from May 8 to May 10 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies in World War II. Zelenskyy said the world would not want to wait for the truce until May 8th, calling for a “complete and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days” to provide “the basis of actual diplomacy.” The White House said President Donald Trump wants a permanent ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, and that Putin and Zelensky will need to come to the negotiation table to end the war. The statement came when the Trump administration took office on the 100th day and was unable to successfully complete its promise to end the war in Ukraine “soon.” French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview Monday that the Western allies will “increase pressure on Russia” over the next 10 days, and that he told the US to strengthen its stance on Moscow. Macron said the next 15 days will be “important” to carry out a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Diplomacy and politics
Zelenskyy said the mineral contract with the US has become “stronger and more fair” after the negotiations, but Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said Kyiv is trying to finalise the deal as soon as possible. The UN refugee agency cut several programs to help Ukrainians fleeing the frontline after the US halted assistance to the organization. The new German government said Berlin would play a bigger role within NATO as the alliance faces questions about its future. German President Frank Walter Steinmeier cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a serious threat, telling his allies at NATO’s Brussels headquarters, “You can count on us.” The UK has proposed a broad statement of shared values with the European Union highlighting Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the Paris Climate Agreement and support for free trade, according to a draft document released ahead of next month’s EU-UK summit. Amazon has launched Elon Musk’s rival service to Starlink and launched its first batch of project Kuiper Internet Satellites. This development has become a replacement for Starlink. This is essential to Kyiv’s war efforts, if Musk had previously threatened to end Ukraine’s access.
