Zelenskyy welcomes the initiative of US leaders and argues that Putin should also be “in-person” in Turkish cities.
President Donald Trump has offered to take part in talks that suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin should be detained directly with Ukraine after he criticized the western “ultimate” to end the conflict between the two Slavic countries.
Trump said Monday that he was “thinking to actually fly” to the Istanbul city of Turkey to attend the expected negotiations on Thursday. The initiative was welcomed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but there was no immediate response from Moscow.
“We all in Ukraine would appreciate President Trump if he could be with us at this meeting in Turkey. This is the right idea.
Trump publicly asked Putin to attend Zelensky after he proposed direct consultations on Sunday after he refused to reject Ukraine and its Western allies.
The Ukrainian leader said he would do so, but Putin said he should also attend in person. On Tuesday, his advisor, Mykhailo Podolyak, reiterated that Zelenskyy would only meet with Putin, and there were no other members of the Russian delegation.
The Kremlin has not commented on whether Putin will travel to Torkie himself. “We are committed to seriously searching for a long-term, peaceful way of reconciliation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday.
If Zelensky and Putin meet on Thursday, it will be their first in-person meeting since December 2019.
I’ve heard President Trump’s statement. Very important words.
I supported @potus’ idea of a complete and unconditional ceasefire, long enough to provide a foundation for diplomacy. And we want it, we are ready to remain silent on our side.
I supported President Trump…
