These are important events on the 1,180th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.
This is where things stand on Monday, May 19th.
Fineting
Russia launched its biggest drone attack on Ukraine since the start of the war, destroying the home and killing at least one woman a day before President Donald Trump was scheduled to discuss the proposed ceasefire with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia has launched 273 drones in Ukrainian cities.
The Ukrainian Military Intelligence Bureau said Russia is planning to launch “training and combat” intercontinental ballistic missiles to threaten Ukraine and the West as ceasefire talks continue.
Russian troops control the Bakhathir settlement in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense said. Russian troops also said they defeated 75 Ukrainian drones on Sunday, according to the Russian provincial TASS news agency.
Cerez-fire meeting
Leaders from France, Germany, Italy and the UK have once again pushed the need for sanctions against Russia in a call with Trump before a telephone summit with Putin on Monday, British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said. Putin told Russian state television that he “has been the cause of the war with Ukraine” and “creating conditions of lasting peace and ensuring the security of Russia” two days after the first in-person meeting since 2022 failed to produce the ceasefire contract. Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelenki met with Rome Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the latest developments in the ceasefire talks with Russia. It was their first meeting since the White House intensified in February. The Pope detained his first private audience as Zelensky’s Catholic leader after highlighting his hopes for peace in the “marristic Ukraine.”
