Sarah survived hunger, multiple wars and years of evacuation at Sudan’s Zamzam camp, and did not believe that paramilitary attacks would run away until the site was turned into a “sacrificed field.”

Last week, artillery and gunfire shook the streets as they attacked a hunger-hit camp in the Darfur region in a war with the Army for nearly two years.

“The bomb had fallen in the house. There was a body on the street. The 22-year-old literature student told AFP News Agency after arriving in the town of Tawila, about 60km (37 miles) west of Zamzam.

Hundreds of families seeking safety in small, hungry towns, blocked from almost all humanitarian and media access.

Getting to Tawira was a frightening process that took many days. Sarah and her 10 family left in the middle of the night to seek safety on foot.

“People were taken away, attacked on the road. A young man was killed,” she said.

Sarah demanded anonymity in fear of retaliation.

The Zamzam Camp has been hit by a wave of people who have evacuated from all over Sudan’s vast Darfur region since the outbreak of war between the Army and the RSF in April 2023.

With 500,000 people already living there, the aid group is likely to have swelled to nearly 1 million, and the first site where starvation was declared in Sudan under the UN support assessment last August did.

Since Janjaweed was repackaged as RSF, some have been in camp for 20 years since torn Darfur apart and fighting the local agricultural community on behalf of then-President Omar al-Bashir in Khartoum.

Last Tuesday, the paramilitary organisations launched a ground attack on Zamzam, setting fire to the main camp markets, witnesses said.

Satellite images from Maxar Technologies show significant damage and the entire building was destroyed at the eastern entrance of the camp where the RSF clashed with militias allied with the military.

Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab, which uses remote sensing data, said Zamzam’s arson attack and structural damage were “consistent with intentional destruction in ground attacks.”

A general adjustment for Darfur’s camp for refugees and refugees is that “the camp streets have been transformed into a murder field full of blood and body parts… Fire swallows the house, screams sounding bullets It’s mixed with.
