Meta announced on Wednesday that it is adding AI-powered summaries to WhatsApp. An optional new feature uses Meta AI to summarise unread messages in chat.

This summary will only be visible to you, not others in your chat, the company points out.

This feature is based on AI technology released by Meta in April, allowing you to implement AI features that do not affect encryption or user privacy.

“Message Summary uses private processing technology. This allows meta AI to generate responses without meta or WhatsApp showing messages or private summaries. No one else in the chat can also summarise unread messages.

While the feature is off by default, WhatsApp displays a small icon to indicate that the feature is available.

Meta initially deployed US features with English support. Later this year, we will reach more countries and languages.

Previously, users can access meta AI in chats to ask general questions, or tag messages to provide the context for the chatbot. However, Meta AI could not read the message.

Meta said the new stack allows WhatsApp to personally access the context from the chat and process requests via AI. This allows you to summarise your message and provide writing suggestions.

The new AI-powered features are available in new settings that can be accessed via Settings > Chat > Private Processing. This allows individual features to be turned on or off.
