Garcia could not confirm that an arrest had been made. She said there are no other suspects believed to have been involved in the violence at Santa Ana High School.

The stab wound occurred in the afternoon as students had left school that day. Santa Ana Unified spokesman Fermin Leal said it was not immediately clear why he prompted the fight that killed the 14-year-old.

The after-school program and track and field were cancelled on Wednesday. Schools are scheduled to reopen Thursday, and crisis counselors will be available on campus, Leal said.

The school serves approximately 3,000 students in Santa Ana, home to 300,000 people (50 kilometers) 300,000 people (50 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles.
