TALHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida’s only publicly historically black university could soon be run by an alliance of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Education has been restricted of African American History and Prohibited public universities From using taxpayer money in diversity programs.
Marva Johnson, a lobbyist and executive at Telecom Company Charter Communications and a former member of the state board of education, has been named one of four finalists to become the next president of Florida A&M University. Students were interviewed by the school’s council meeting Wednesday, opposing the candidacy on campus.

The prospect that candidates on Desantis line up can soon lead FAMU is wary of students, faculty and alumni who celebrate the university’s legacy of black excellence, social mobility and cultural pride.
Desantis representatives did not respond to requests for comment from the Associated Press.
Johnson was appointed to the state committee by Desantis and then Gov. Rick Scott has been criticized for his lack of management experience in higher education. Before councillors Wednesday, Johnson promoted his skills in navigating the corporate world and the state legislature.
“As a leader, I’m advocating for resources. If they get in your way, I’m moving the mountains,” Johnson said. “I will never be the best academic at this point in my career.”
While Johnson asked questions from the trustees, dozens of students and alumni gathered across campus to gather at meetings to pray for the future of the university that helped lift offspring of enslaved people and produce generations of lawyers, pharmacists, architects and engineers.
“We can’t fall in history by saying we have lost our glorious Fama,” said pastor and alumni Quincy Griffin. “It’s not my watch.”
Elijah Hooks, a FAMU political science student and chief of staff at Florida Student Association, pointed to overhauling recent attempts by the Desantis allies. University of West Florida and New College in Floridawhat critics called hostile Political buyouts.
“They want their students not to learn anything like Black Studies,” Hook said. “They want them to be controlled by certain stories and certain beliefs.”
The effort “to limit what we cannot and cannot learn” is a spit in the face of his ancestors, Hook said, leading the crowd with the chant “No Magazine Malva!”, a reference to President Donald Trump’s “Great Again of America” agenda.

The school’s board of trustees is expected to vote for the finalist on Friday. Their choices must then be confirmed by the state president.
