Trump claims he is “not kidding” about seeking a third term as president | Donald Trump News

Donald Trump has suggested that he will explore his path to a third term as President of the United States despite constitutional restrictions.

US President Donald Trump has said he is “not kidding” about his request for a third term banned by the US Constitution.

In a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump spoke directly to potential speculations for a potential third term, adding, “No, I’m not kidding. I’m not kidding,” but “it’s too early to think about it.”

“As you know, there’s a way you can do it,” he said.

The 22nd amendment to the US Constitution, whether consecutive or not, limits the president to a four-year, two-year term of office.

The amendment to Article 22 states that “a person must not be elected more than once in the President’s office.”

Trump was asked in an NBC interview about a scenario where his running buddy, Vice President J.D. Vance, could take office before he stepped aside to allow him to take over. Trump acknowledged the possibility and said “it’s one” approach.

“But there are others,” he added.

“We’re working on that.”

To overturn the 22nd Amendment, two-thirds of majority in both Congressional homes would need to be ratified by three-quarters of the 50 US states.

Trump, who began his second non-term term in January, has repeatedly hinted at extending his tenure.

Some of his allies have come to mind the idea of keeping him in power beyond 2028, but Trump himself occasionally teases his potential in the way he often untold his political opponents.

If he pursues another term in the 2028 election, Trump, the oldest president to be launched in the United States in January 2025, would be 82 years old.

The precedent for two-term restrictions dates back to 1796, when George Washington voluntarily resigned after two terms.

This tradition was hardly challenged for over 140 years, until Franklin D. Roosevelt won the third term during Great Repression and World War II in 1940. Roosevelt passed away in 1945 for several months and urged Congress to formalize term restrictions in the 22nd Amendment in 1951.

Longtime Trump adviser Steve Bannon proposed in an interview with News Nation on March 19 that Trump might seek re-election in 2028.

“We’re working on that,” Bannon said. His team added that he is looking for ways to reinterpret the definition of time limits to promote the third term.
