Snowhill, N.C. (AP) — It’s been decades since the Green Central High School band competed in North Carolina’s statewide competition for musicians. The band members wanted to do well, but they weren’t prepared for the surprise they got.

It began when band Andrew Howell stepped into the bus that students from a small school in eastern North Carolina were waiting for after the March 19 contest. My head fell apart, predicting the worst.

He then elicited plaques awarding the band with a superior rating, the North Carolina Bandmasters Association’s highest ranking, and yelled and cheered. Their congratulatory video recorded by trumpet player Haley Kinzler has been seen by millions after being posted on Tiktok and other social media sites.

“I didn’t think I was going to get a boss,” Kinsler told The Associated Press. “Along the way, I thought it would be a sad video.”

Just a few years ago, the band had only a few dozen students, but they last competed in 1987.

Green Central High School didn’t just earn a good reputation at the event, but this wasn’t a direct matchup for the school. said Howell. However, it was the first time that a band at his school had achieved that reputation, he said.

Howell, who took over the program in 2019, said it took him a few minutes to calm himself down after learning how well his band was doing and how he composed the speech he was planning to give them. It came out of the window as he stepped into the bus, he said.

“When they succeed, I’m just sharing their excitement and seeing how excited they are for it. I think that was the most rewarding part of the whole experience,” he said.
