Terminal 1 closes. Terminal 2 will be doubled. Terminal 3 has gotten a complete upgrade, including a 500-seat bar, expanded dining, a new security hall and 40% seating.

Manchester Airport is expanding. A huge £1.3 billion project is underway to increase airport capacity. Currently, there are three terminals at the airport, but plans are currently underway to expand Terminals 2 and 3 and close Terminal 1.

Terminal 3 will undergo major renovations and the project is expected to be completed by 2026. Terminal 1 will be closed, some of which will be used to expand the improved T3.

Many expansions have been seen at airports in recent years. In 2021, Terminal 2 was expanded to double the size. This is a development that won the Prix Versailles Award Award. Since then, the T2 has served more than 30 million passengers.

Terminal 1 will be closed and will be used to expand the improved Terminal 3. Officials say the goal is to develop a modern and efficient two-end airport. Terminal 2 has already doubled its size. What’s going on now?

Phase 2 of Terminal 2 development (final phase) is currently underway. This will fuse the original T2 with the new extension. The new upgraded terminal will be fully open in the second half of 2025. Once completed, 70% of passengers will be serving.

Something that hasn’t started yet

Terminal 3 has been announced, but it has not yet begun. Here’s a breakdown of the upgrade to T3.

New entrance (using the entrance to old Terminal 1) New security hall and departure lounge 500 seat bar, extended dining (and views of the airfield) More than 40% departure lounge seats New food and drink outlet (not named yet)

Additional upgrades include new retail units and updated interiors. The design includes honeycomb lighting. This nods to the bee coat of arms of a Manchester worker.

Opened in 1989, Terminal 3 mainly serves domestic routes.

The airport is also improving ground infrastructure. A new Link Road is under construction on Sydney Avenue. It is set to improve traffic flow at the entrance to Thorley Lane. Airfield upgrades are underway and new taxable routes are being tried to support increased traffic.

Managing Director Chris Woodroof said it aims to provide an experience consistent with the “European capital.” Terminal 2 has already won the Prix Versailles Award for Design.

No final list of retailers or F&B operators has been announced. The airport says more announcements will continue as construction progresses.
