Birmingham secured two prestigious medical conferences to be held in 2026, strengthening its position as a major hub for healthcare innovation and research.

The British Surgery Association (BSSH) and Labeduk26 are the flagship events of the Institute Association, both of which will be held in the East Side Room after a successful partnership bid with Birmingham and the West Midlands Convention Bureau, part of the West Midlands Growth Company.

Together, the event is expected to attract more than 600 representatives from across the UK and beyond, making a significant contribution to the local economy through hotel stays, meals, transportation and other visitor spending.

The economic impact of holding both meetings is projected to exceed £140,000, further strengthening Birmingham’s reputation as a destination for prominent academic and scientific meeting choices.

“We’re a great leader in Birmingham City Council,” said Cllr John Cotton. “This demonstrates the power of cooperation in showing Birmingham’s strengths in healthcare and life sciences. We are proud to ensure that we not only bring economic value, but also deepen our thriving connections with the national and international healthcare community.”

“The British Surgery Association has been a great opportunity to help people understand the importance of their efforts,” said Carlos Helas Paloo, president of the British Surgery Association. “We are pleased to bring the BSSH Science Conference to Birmingham. The East Side Room, combined with the city’s excellent transport links and proximity to major clinical and academic institutions, provides an attractive destination for our members.”

The West Midlands boasts a full-service life sciences economy of £10.3 billion. The region’s 87,000 STEM students graduate from world-class universities every year and are graduates of over 17,000 medical professionals.
