Syrian authorities say three ISIL fighters were killed and several others were taken into custody in the Aleppo raid.

Syrian security forces have killed three ISIL (ISIS) fighter jets and arrested four others in Aleppo, authorities said the interim government has announced the first such operation against a group of Syrian second city.

Syrian Home Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the attack launched by the general security department in conjunction with General Information Services targeted multiple ISIL sleeper cells operating across Aleppo.

He said one security guard was killed during the surgery.

The forces stormed the site and seized “explosive devices, explosive vests, and many common security force uniforms,” the statement added.

The UK-based Syrian Human Rights Observatory said the operation took place in Aleppo’s Haydarya district, and the clashes also occurred in another neighborhood.

Ahmed Alshara, a temporary Syrian who assumed power in Damascus in December, has long been opposed to ISIL. His army fought against the group’s self-declared caliph during the Syrian War.

US President Donald Trump met Alshara in Saudi Arabia this week and described him as “a charming man with a very strong past.”

Following the conference, Washington announced that it would lift sanctions against Syria, a major policy change and boost to Alshara’s transitional government.

Alshara took power in Damascus in December after his forces defeated Bashar al-Assad with a lightning strike. Al-Sharaa cut ties with Al-Qaeda in 2016.

The latest operation comes just months after Syrian authorities said they had blocked the ISIL bombing plot near Seida Zainab Shrine, a key pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims south of Damascus.
