SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – South Korean police on Tuesday questioned an elementary school teacher who allegedly stabbed a student in Dao Jeon city.
Monday’s incident during after-school care shocked the country and urged the country’s deputy president to direct a review of school safety standards.
The suspect is receiving hospital treatment for self-injured wounds after a young girl died in an audiovisual room on the second floor of the school, and Yuk John, chief of the Western District Police Station in Daijon. Mayon said.
The suspect, reportedly in his 40s, told police he returned to work after his leave due to health reasons, Yuk said. She told police she has been undergoing treatment for depression since 2018.
Police and their families searched the school and the surrounding area after the girl, a first-grade student, was reported missing at 5:15pm on Monday. Her grandmother found her in the audiovisual room around 5:50pm. The girl rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead.
