Coinbase It will secure licenses from Luxembourg, provide crypto services throughout the European Union, and make the region’s central hub the country.

The main European bases on the US Crypto Exchange have been in Ireland since 2023.

Coinbase said on Friday it acquired the market with a Crypto Assets (MICA) license from the Luxembourg committee’s oversight department.

MICA is a drastic regulation aimed at creating a harmonious legal framework for crypto across all 27 EU member states. The rules, fully enacted late last year, also aim to reduce the risk of consumers buying crypto assets following a string of scandals in the sector.

This will make Coinbase the first US crypto exchange to receive a MICA license. Rival Gemini, owned by Winklevoss Twins, is expected to soon receive its own EU license from Malta. Gemini chose Malta as the Micahub in January.

“Coinbase is all in Europe and we advocate for the future of crypto across the continent,” Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong told CNBC. “MICA sets the standard and Luxembourg is leading the way with a thoughtful approach to the business environment and regulations.”

Previously, Coinbase decided to set Ireland as the central EU hub in 2023, launching a major public relations blitz during the time’s travel. However, the company ultimately betrayed the decision and concluded that Luxembourg made more sense about its status as a “progressive financial hub.”

“There have been few decisions being made, but that decision has not been made much because of the reason Luxembourg offered such a compelling option,” said Daniel Seyfert, vice president and regional managing director of Coinbase EMEA.

Luxembourg has four blockchain-related policies signed to the law, but Ireland currently has no cryptographic laws.

He added that Coinbase still has a significant investment in Ireland and has a “immediate” plan to add around 50 jobs to its local Dublin office. Seifert has also personally moved from Germany as CEO of Coinbase’s Irish organization.

Globally, Coinbase is not the first to receive encryption approvals across the EU, but it is one of the biggest. Rival Exchange BYBIT, OKX and BITGO all secure their own MICA licenses.
