Just two months after its successful debut, Chinese AI startup Deepseek has surged and has become the world’s second most popular AI chatbot. According to website tracking company Simarweb, Deepseek.com sees more visits than Google’s Gemini and Chariture.ai.

This happens more than a week after Deepseek overtakes ChatGpt and becomes the top-rate free app on Apple’s US app store. Buzz around the report spiked after the report showed that it outperformed the V3 model Meta’s Lama 3.1, Openai’s GPT-4O and Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 on third-party benchmarks.

Deepseek overtakes Google Gemini

Google responds to the competition

But Google hasn’t back down. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, rejected the Deepseek model, saying it is less efficient than Google’s model. “The cost of actually using it will continue to fall, which will make more use cases feasible,” Pichai said.

On February 5th, Google expanded its Gemini 2.0 lineup with several new AI models, featuring budget-friendly Flash and Flash Lite along with the expected predictable Pro Experimental. This release has launched Google’s Flash Thinking Themensing Model for all app users.

“Google is trapped in DeepSeek when it comes to balancing quality and price, but DeepSeek’s chatbots have leapt through Google’s Gemini,” the information reported.

Traffic explosion at deepseek.com

Sirseweb data shows Deepseek.com last week recorded a record 49 million visits, with a jump of 614% since last week. Although this figure does not include app-based traffic, it highlights Deepseek’s rapid growth. A month ago, the site averaged 300,000 visitors daily, but by January 27th, its number had exploded to 33.4 million, shaking US tech stocks.

Deepseek is currently outperforming Google’s Gemini and Charther.ai. But it still follows Openai’s ChatGpt, with 130-140 million visits per day. Deepseek’s numbers fall short of Microsoft’s Bing.com and integrates Openai’s Copilot AI.

Interest in Deepseek surged after the company released its open source V3 model. This reportedly costs just $5.5 million to train, which is part of what US companies are spending. V3 offers similar functionality to ChatGPT, allowing you to download it freely and run it on a local server.

The latest figures on SimaryWeb show that global visits to Deepseek.com have settled to 29.2 million last Friday. In the US, it peaked at 4.9 million visits on January 28th, and by January 31st it was soaked at 2.4 million people, up 813.3% per week.

How long will Deepseek continue?

However, this momentum may not last. Competition in the AI chatbot space is intensifying. Openai recently launched a new feature called “Deep Research.” It generates a comprehensive report by deriving data from hundreds of online sources. Deepseek is also facing scrutiny about privacy and censorship practices, which could push users up to other options.

In addition to that challenge, DeepSeek.com experienced a massive cyberattack on January 27th, forcing it to temporarily suspend new user registrations. The move comes after millions of users flocked to the Apple App Store and pushed the app to surpass Openai’s ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app in the US.

“A massive malicious attack on Deepseek’s services has temporarily restricted registrations to ensure continuous service. Existing users can log in as usual. Your understanding and support Thank you very much,” Deepseek said on his status page.
