Zelenskyy said the fatal strike in his hometown of Kryvyi Rih showed that Russia did not want a ceasefire. The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump had no plans to speak after Putin’s investment mission visited Washington. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “many things need to happen” in the coming weeks to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine, and that negotiations will not last forever. NATO Secretary General Mark Latte said after meeting with NATO Foreign Minister of Brussels, Ball on the Ukraine ceasefire was in a Russian court. British and French foreign ministers accused Putin of limping in ceasefire talks and called for a quick response from Russia after weeks of US efforts to secure an armistice.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told Reuters that the potential peace deal between Ukraine and Russia is “hard to digest,” but it is even better than alternatives to death and destruction.
Politics and diplomacy
The NATO allies in Europe and Canada said they are willing to increase their defence spending, but that America’s demands for the size of their military budget are cool. US allies have spent billions of dollars on defense, but nearly a third has not met NATO’s target of at least 2% of gross domestic product. NATO members, Poland, Finland and all three Baltic countries, are in line to withdraw from the Ottawa Treaty from the Treaty of Ottawa, in the face of what they say is expanding the military threat from Russia.
