A report presented to the North Carolina State Lottery Commission on Wednesday said it regulates betting and the state expects it to collect $131.3 million in taxes from its first year sports betting business through March 10.

This amount goes far beyond the estimates of state legislative researchers as the bill went on through the general assembly in which it was enacted in 2023. They predicted that tax revenue would reach $100 million a year within five years. This calculation is based on the 18% rate of legal stakes. This is basically a bet from the payable prize, excluding revenue.

Windfall is connected to a big bet. The committee reports that over $6.8 billion in bets were placed in the first year of the North Carolina business, bringing total betting revenue to eight licensees of $729.3 million.

“It was a very successful year in my opinion,” said Sterl Carpenter, chief business development officer at lottery tickets, who helped pull sports betting off the ground. “Things went very well.”

“I think we are very encouraged by the outcome,” Commissioner Kari Boyce said.

With a population of 11 million, North Carolina was considered an attractive market for interactive betting companies looking to open. Before the law was enacted, sports gambling was legal in North Carolina only in three casinos run by two American Indian tribes.

Under the law, registered customers within state borders can place bets on professionals, universities, or Olympic style sports. The law allows future face-to-face bets through sportsbooks beyond what is already found in tribal casinos.

Nearly $500 million in sports betting revenue over the past year has been considered “promotional bets.” This is an incentive for new customers that the company offers after the initial bet is placed. With these amounts removed, the perfect months with the highest total bets were November, December and January. This was a period that featured university and professional soccer playoffs, college basketball, professional hockey and hoops.

The collected tax revenues go partially to most University of North Carolina System Schools, amateur sports initiatives, and athletic departments in education and treatment of gambling addiction.
